Sustainability questions come from two standards, not one
Your customer's sustainability list draws from standards that you yourself did not choose. Knowing which ones determines what belongs in the answer.
Where the questions come from
Most come from the VSME, EFRAG's voluntary standard for non-listed mid-market and small businesses. It exists precisely to prevent each customer from inventing their own list, and it covers environment, social and governance.
The emissions questions come from elsewhere: from the GHG Protocol, with its breakdown into scope 1, 2 and 3. Scope 1 is what you burn yourself, scope 2 is what is in your purchased energy, and scope 3 is everything in your supply chain. The latter is the question where most lists get stuck.
Three types of answers
Part of it is a number: energy consumption per year, the share of renewables, the number of workplace accidents with sick leave. Part of it is yes or no: is there a health and safety policy, is personnel covered by a collective bargaining agreement, is there a whistleblower channel.
And part of it asks for a document. These three types come from different corners of the business, and that is why filling it out takes so long.
What it yields once it is in place
The next list costs almost no time. What you have documented once — with the source and the reference date — is already there, and you only confirm what has changed.
